CONTEXT

Being a cycle enthusuast the Festka project with Michal Bacak inspired me to create a system of patterns based on his work with Festka.

The research for the pattern system is informed by Blue-Willow, Yuan ceramic and Chinoiserie styles. While the pattern system itself is informed from Central & South Asian tile and textile construction.

:CREATING A PATTERN INSPIRED FROM MICHAL BACAK’S FESTKA SPECTRE PRIME PORCELAIN CYCLE

Inspiration

Michal Bacak’s Festka Porcelain design for Suratchai Chenyavanij with FESTKA led me to investigate the art&design history of the Yuan dynasty ceramics, english Blue-willow illustrations and the Chinioiserie style.

from this I created a generic framework of how to mimic these styles for the pattern to be made:
  1. elements of locality
  2. a compact composition

 Construction
  & Structure

I began by attempting to recreate the illustrations incorporating elements from my locality. But faced issues with the composition of bringing the seperate elements together.

the process began to become messy—and so I decided to distill, the framework of compact composition, into using dots as the key element to make up the visual representation.

initially by creating elements from these dots and bringing them to create multiple compositions with each other. Informed by my research into tiles from a seperate project I began to incorporate Indian motifs into the dot pattern system. Creating a multiple elements to use within the composition.

Execution

after creating various pieces digitally I decided to move to an in-person medium.

I decided to translate this project onto clothes as I was informed by various textile patterns.
